Bishop Donald Sanborn Beliefs, Heresies and Practices Exposed

This article contains content used from author: Brother Peter Dimond of Most Holy Family Monastery / mostholyfamilymonastery.com

Donald J. Sanborn (born 1957) is a self-professed Traditionalist Catholic bishop belonging to the Sedeprivationist school or party. Unhappy with the church reforms being introduced in light of the Second Vatican Council, he entered Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's seminary in Ecône, Switzerland in 1971, and was initially made a priest while belonging to the Society of St. Pius X under Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre on June 29, 1975.

Bishop Donald Sanborn was born in New York to a family of English ancestry who have relatively deep roots in the area, having arrived in New England as far back as 1632. In 1977, he was appointed the Rector of the first SSPX's seminary in the Americas at Michigan, but moved it to a larger base St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary at Connecticut two years later. As the SSPX was making gestures to the modernist Vatican, in 1983, Sanborn was among nine SSPX priests expelled because they objected to liturgical changes imposed by Archbishop Lefebvre, as well as to other disturbing leftward trends in the Archbishop's organization.

In early 1983, Archbishop Lefebvre directed the SSPX's American priests to follow Angelo Roncalli's (John XXIII's) liturgical books of 1962. Lefebvre also insisted that priests publicly affirm their allegiance to "Pope" John Paul II, which the sedevacantists among them, including Sanborn, refused. They were promptly expelled from the SSPX. Thereafter, these priests, and a few other seminarians who joined them from the SSPX, formed the Society of St. Pius V (SSPV) under the leadership of Clarence Kelly, upholding sedevacantism. Sanborn was one of the founding priests.

Within the SSPV too, differences arose over Kelly's rejection of the Thuc-lineage bishops as invalid, and Sanborn, Daniel Dolan, Cekada and others left, becoming independent priests.

In 1984 Fr. Sanborn established the independent Traditionalist Catholic Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Martinez, California.

During the early 1990s, Sanborn turned his hand to writing and produced articles exposing the heresies of the Second Vatican Council and the reigning Anti-Pope Karol Wojtyla ("John Paul II"). He founded a scholarly quarterly journal for "Catholic" priests called Sacerdotium and a periodical for the laity called Catholic Restoration. Encouraged by other traditionalist priests, in 1995 he founded the Most Holy Trinity Seminary for the formation of priests, originally based at Warren, Michigan but would later move to Brooksville, Florida. He was made a "Catholic" Bishop in 2002 by Bishop Robert McKenna, a Dominican. Sanborn is now a Thuc lineage bishop, so many traditionalists dispute the validity of his consecration. Sanborn has a considerable internet presence.

Bishop Donald Sanborn Thuc-line bishop

All those consecrated by the heretic Bishop Thuc or by others of his line (or by any other heretic or schismatic) cannot exercise their orders lawfully since they (in addition to being heretics and outside the Church) lack the canonical mission which the Council of Trent dogmatically teaches to be necessary for a bishop to be a legitimate minister of the word and the sacraments: “If anyone say… that those who have not been rightly ordained by ecclesiastical and canonical power and have not been sent [by the Church], but come from some other source [such as a heretical or schismatical source], are lawful ministers of the word and of the sacraments: let him be anathema.” (Council of Trent, Session XXIII, Canon VII; Denzinger 967). Plainly no necessity, no claim of epikeia can override, even in an extreme need, an obligation derived, not from human law, but from Divine law infallibly proposed as such by the Church (such as the Divine Law that forbids Catholics to communicate in the sacraments with non-Catholics and heretics).

Bishop Thuc signed the heretical Vatican II documents, at which point he was known to be a notorious heretic with no office in the Church. He was one of the most liberal, rebellious, and heretical bishops at Vatican II. From his own writings during the robber’s Second Vatican II Council, Thuc supported the false ecumenical movement, feminism, and women in sacred functions, such as deacons and priests.

1917 Code of Canon Law: “Canon 2372. Reception of Orders from Unworthy Prelates: All persons who presume to receive orders from a prelate who has been excommunicated, suspended, or interdicted by a declaratory or condemnatory sentence, or from a notorious apostate, heretic, or schismatic, automatically incur suspension a divinis reserved to the Apostolic See. Any person who has been ordained in good faith by such a man, forfeits the right to exercise the order thus received until he obtains a dispensation from the prohibition.”

The Communication of Catholics with Schismatics, Holy Orders: “[p. 103] Persons ordained by schismatic bishops were, upon a proper rectification or amendment in their status, to be reconciled and absolved. … Before the ordained persons could exercise their Orders, it was necessary for them to receive from the Holy See a dispensation from the irregularity which they had incurred.”

It is of the faith—therefore, epikeia cannot justify it—that a notorious apostate, heretic, or schismatic bishop cannot be a legal successor to the apostles, nor can he propagate a legal line by ordaining Catholic priests or bishops. People ordained by heretics or schismatics are valid priests and bishops, but their orders are unlawful and illicit, which means that they cannot exercise their order without sin.

If illegal bishops and priests, such as the Thucites, want to enter the Catholic Church and have their sins forgiven, they must abjure by renouncing their schismatic crime and any heresies they believe in, along with the public crimes of schism and heresy of the non-Catholic bishop who consecrated or ordained them.

The Communication of Catholics with Schismatics, Holy Orders: “[p. 103] If they had embraced any errors, they had previously to abjure them; if they had not embraced any errors, they had nevertheless to renounce the schism of their ordaining prelate. The abjuration was to be made either publicly or secretly, as the facts in the case directed.”

Most Holy Trinity Seminary Statement of Belief

Most holy Trinity homepage states the following facts about themselves on their website:

Most Holy Trinity Seminary was founded in 1995 in order to provide priestly training for young men who thoroughly reject Vatican II, its reforms, and the Modernist hierarchy which promulgates them. This position is in contrast to the seminaries of traditionalist groups that operate with the approval of the Modernist hierarchy, or who seek this approval.

The Seminary trains priests according to pre-Vatican II standards. Its rule, discipline, spiritual formation, and academic curriculum imitate faithfully those which were in effect in seminaries before the Second Vatican Council. By training priests in this manner, the seminary hopes to contribute to the solution to the problem of the nearly universal desintegration of Catholic faith, morals, discipline, and liturgy which the Second Vatican Council has caused.

The seminary sees that the only solution to the problem of Vatican II, however, is to condemn it as a false council which was dominated by heretics, and to discard and ignore its decrees and enactments. Consequently, the Seminary does not seek to be recognized by the heretical hierarchy which promulgates Vatican II, nor does it seek to work with the Novus Ordo clergy, as if in a single church or religion.

The Seminary therefore repudiates the idea of the Motu Proprio Mass, or that of a fraternity of priests which has received permission or seeks permission from the Novus Ordo hierarchy to function in communion with the Modernist heretics.

The Catholic Church, in the outlook of the Seminary, will not be cured of its current problems until the hierarchical sees, particularly the papacy, are once again occupied by Catholics. For as long as Modernist heretics possess the mere appearance of authority which they now possess, the problem of Vatican II will continue. In the meantime the Seminary, as well as the priests who emanate from it, shall abhor even the suggestion of an official recognition from the Novus Ordo hierarchy, or of a compromise with the Modernists, whom St. Pius X called the “most pernicious of all the enemies of the Church,” who are striving “utterly to subvert the very Kingdom of Christ.”

Bishop Donald Sanborn's Heretical Beliefs and Practices Exposed

Bishop Sanborn sadly believes that souls can be saved in false religions, and he kicks out of his church anyone who doesn’t believe in “baptism of desire.” Bishop Sanborn believes that non-Catholics, including Jews and pagans, can be saved by “invincible ignorance” and baptism of desire. Since Sanborn is a notorious heretic who not only imposes his heresy upon those at his Mass, but also an automatically, majorly excommunicated notorious heretic, Catholics must avoid him and other such pestilential heretics’ Masses and not receive any sacraments from them under pain of mortal sin.

Pope Benedict XIV, Ex Quo Primum (# 23), March 1, 1756: “Moreover heretics and schismatics are subject to the censure of major excommunication by the law of Can. de Ligu. 23, quest. 5, and Can. Nulli, 5, dist. 19.”

As we have seen, people automatically excommunicated in this way are majorly excommunicated, which means that they must be shunned for religious purposes and the sacraments:

St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, Suppl., Part, Q. 23, Art. 1: “The other is major excommunication which deprives a man of the sacraments of the Church and of the communion of the faithful [prayers, religious gatherings, etc.]. WHEREFORE IT IS NOT LAWFUL TO COMMUNICATE WITH ONE WHO LIES UNDER SUCH AN EXCOMMUNICATION.”

Bishop Sanborn publishes an “Anti-Feeneyite” Catechism, while he believes that pagans and idolaters can be saved

Bishop Sanborn is a “traditionalist” bishop who has aggressively attacked those who don’t believe in baptism of desire. Many don’t know that, in addition to holding this false position, Sanborn also (like almost every other “traditionalist” priest today) believes that souls can be saved in false religions. He thus rejects the dogma Outside the Church There is No Salvation in its defined meaning.

Bishop Donald Sanborn, Sacerdotium V, p. 24: “Wojtyla’s ecclesiology goes a step beyond Vatican II, a little step for man, but a great step for apostasy. While the Council seems to draw the line of the Mystical Body around those ‘who in faith look towards Jesus’ – whatever that means – Wojtyla [John Paul II] is ready to sign up the entire human race in the Mystical Body by the fact, as he says, that all are united to Christ by means of the Incarnation. With this principle, the Novus Ordites are in ‘communion’ not only with the Anglicans and the Orthodox, but with everything: Moslems, Buddhists, Hindus, spiritists, Jews, Great Thumb worshippers. You name it; they are in communion with it. Vatican II’s idea of the Church is heretical, since it identifies organized religions of pagans and idolaters with the Mystical Body of Christ. The truth is that in no way are pagans and idolaters, as pagans and idolaters, united to the Mystical Body of Christ. If, by some mystery of Providence and Predestination, they [pagans and idolaters] are united to the soul of the Church, and by desire to its body, it is in spite of their paganism and idolatry. It is due to an invincible ignorance of their error.”

As we see here, Bishop Donald Sanborn is a heretic who rejects the dogma that the Catholic Faith is necessary for all for salvation. His words above prove that he rejects the dogma. He bluntly indicates that it’s possible for pagans and idolaters to be united to the Church and be saved. This is clear-cut heresy. He has repeated this heresy on numerous occasions. For instance, in a sermon on 2/17/08, Sanborn stated again that people can worship a false god without guilt through invincible ignorance and that souls can be saved in false religions.

Pope Gregory XVI, Summo Iugiter Studio (# 2), May 27, 1832: “Finally some of these misguided people attempt to persuade themselves and others that men are not saved only in the Catholic religion, but that even heretics may attain eternal life.”

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, The Athanasian Creed, Sess. 8, Nov. 22, 1439, ex cathedra: “Whoever wishes to be saved, needs above all to hold the Catholic faith; unless each one preserves this whole and inviolate, he will without a doubt perish in eternity.” (Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils, Vol. 1, pp. 550-553; Denzinger 39-40)

Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, Constitution 1, 1215, ex cathedra: “There is indeed one universal Church of the faithful, outside of which nobody at all is saved, in which Jesus Christ is both priest and sacrifice.”

Pope Gregory XVI, Summo Iugiter Studio, May 27, 1832, on no salvation outside the Church: “Finally some of these misguided people attempt to persuade themselves and others that men are not saved only in the Catholic religion, but that even heretics may attain eternal life… You know how zealously Our predecessors taught that article of faith which these dare to deny, namely the necessity of the Catholic faith and of unity for salvation… Omitting other appropriate passages which are almost numberless in the writings of the Fathers, We shall praise St. Gregory the Great who expressly testifies that THIS IS INDEED THE TEACHING OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. He says: ‘The holy universal Church teaches that it is not possible to worship God truly except in her and asserts that all who are outside of her will not be saved.’ Official acts of the Church proclaim the same dogma. Thus, in the decree on faith which Innocent III published with the synod of Lateran IV, these things are written: ‘There is one universal Church of all the faithful outside of which no one is saved.’ Finally the same dogma is also expressly mentioned in the profession of faith proposed by the Apostolic See, not only that which all Latin churches use, but also that which the Greek Orthodox Church uses and that which other Eastern Catholics use. We did not mention these selected testimonies because We thought you were ignorant of that article of faith and in need of Our instruction. Far be it from Us to have such an absurd and insulting suspicion about you. But We are so concerned about this serious and well known dogma, which has been attacked with such remarkable audacity, that We could not restrain Our pen from reinforcing this truth with many testimonies.”

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Cantate Domino,” 1441, ex cathedra: “The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only those who abide in it do the Church’s sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia productive of eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.”

Bishop Sanborn is preaching a new gospel directly contrary to Sacred Scripture. He is preaching that idolaters can actually be saved.

1 Corinthians 6:9: “Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God.”

Bishop Sanborn holds the same heresy that Archbishop Lefebvre held.

Archbishop Lefebvre, Open Letter to Confused Catholics, 1986: “‘Outside the Catholic Church there is no salvation’Does that mean that no Protestant, no Muslim, no Buddhist or animist will be saved? No, it would be a second error to think that. … The doctrine of the Church also recognizes implicit—baptism of desire. This consists in doing the will of God. God knows all men and He knows that amongst Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists and in the whole of humanity there are men of good will. They receive the grace of baptism without knowing it, but in an effective way. In this way they become part of the Church.” (From his book Open Letter to Confused Catholics, 1986, Chapter X, Ecumenism, p. 73-4)

Those who refuse to believe in the dogma Outside the Church There is No Salvation until they understand how there is justice in it are simply withholding their Faith in Christ’s revelation. Those with the true Faith in Christ (and His Church) accept His teaching first and understand the truth in it (i.e., why it is true) second. A Catholic does not withhold his belief in Christ’s revelation until he can understand it. That is the mentality of a faithless heretic who possesses insufferable pride. St. Anselm sums up the true Catholic outlook on this point.

St. Anselm, Doctor of the Church, Prosologion, Chap. 1: “For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, that unless I believed, I should not understand.”

This is also the same heresy that is held by the CMRI, SSPV, SSPX, FSSP, Dolan, Cekada, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. Almost all priests in the country today hold the same horrible heresy that souls can be saved in false religions (heresy), and even as idolaters and pagans. They say that these idolaters and pagans (Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, etc.) are united to the Church and saved in spite of their false religion. But it makes no difference that they say that the pagans and idolaters are saved in spite of their paganism and idolatry, because they are saying that people who don’t have the Catholic Faith – and are in false religions – can be saved, which is blatant heresy.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Sess. 8, Nov. 22, 1439, ex cathedra: Whoever wishes to be saved, needs above all to hold the Catholic faith; unless each one preserves this whole and inviolate, he will without a doubt perish in eternity.– But the Catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in the Trinity, and the Trinity in unity… Therefore let him who wishes to be saved, think thus concerning the Trinity.

But it is necessary for eternal salvation that he faithfully believe also in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ...the Son of God is God and man... This is the Catholic faith; unless each one believes this faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.”

Bishop Sanborn told someone we know that a Christ-hating Jew could possibly be saved without the Catholic Faith. But this shouldn’t really surprise people, considering what Sanborn says above about pagans and idolaters being saved.

Sanborn even informed someone we know (whom he kicked out of his chapel for believing in the necessity of water baptism) that he (i.e. Sanborn) believes that a Jew who hates Christ could be saved while hating Christ. Sanborn’s colleague, Fr. Anthony Cekada believes similarly, and even said that the Catholic dogma on salvation doesn’t exclude the idea that non-Catholic “individuals” are saved, but only that their sects are means of salvation. (Closing statement in a debate in The Remnant, March 31, 2002.) This is a heretical rejection of the dogma, of course; for the definitions on salvation declare just the opposite: they declare that all individuals who die as non-Catholics are lost. The definitions don’t merely say that their non-Catholic religions are not means of salvation.

Another person we know told us the following:

“I spoke to Bishop Sanborn in December 2004. And I asked him does a Jew who is taught to denounce Christ have a better chance to go to heaven than a so-called ‘Feeneyite.’ His response was ‘yes.’”

This is pure evil. A “feeneyite” is an adherent to a position which has become known as “feeneyism”, which is the doctrinal position associated with Fr. Leonard Feeney (1897–1978), a Jesuit priest and founder of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who advocated a strict and correct interpretation of the doctrine extra Ecclesiam nulla salus ("outside the Church there is no salvation") and on the absolute necessity of receiving water baptism for salvation without exception. Yet the heretic and totally faithless Sanborn says that a Christ rejecting Jew have a better chance to go to heaven than those Catholics who strictly adhere to the Church’s infallible and correct teaching on outside the Catholic Church and water baptism there is no salvation!

  • Outside the Catholic Church there is positively no salvation (Lateran IV: Denz. 430; [802]; Pope Boniface VIII: Denz. 468-69; [870, 875]; Council of Florence: Denz. 714; [1351]; Pius IX:1716-17; [2916-17])

  • The Sacrament of Baptism makes one a member of the Church (Florence: Denz. 696; [1314]; Council of Trent: Denz. 895; [1671]);

  • Anyone not Baptized (sacramentally) is not a member of the Catholic Church (Trent: Denz. 895; [1671]), that is, he is not “truly incorporated into the Church” (Pope Leo IV- Council of Valence III: Denz. 324);

  • The Sacrament of Baptism is in water ONLY, the two (water and Baptism) are inseparable, and neither is separable from its link with the other (Pope St. Leo I: Tome-Council of Chalcedon I), and must be confessed as such (Council of Vienne: Denz. 482; [903]; Trent: Denz. 858; [1615]);

  • The Sacrament of Baptism is necessary for salvation (Pope Benedict XIV: Denz. 1470) for adults and for children alike (Vienne: Ddnz. 482; [903]), and is optional for NO ONE (Trent: Denz. 861; [1618]).

For them, dogmas are not truths fallen from heaven, but just a vague outline of what may or may not be enforced by God and they understand dogma only in a practical sense, without any norms for truly believing. Sanborn, Cekada, Kramer, among other blasphemers, reiterates a philosophy that embraces a bogus objective-subjective heresy that attests God has not given man the knowledge to undoubtedly conclude someone is in hell. According to this logic, the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity might have a subjective component that includes a fourth person! Sound preposterous? With heretics, any apostasy is plausible.

Apart from Catholic common sense, when pondering the Old Law, it becomes even clearer that God’s words are to be taken as ‘entire truths’. In the Old Testament, He gave very specific laws and commands and the people were bound to obey. When the covenant of circumcision was explained, Abraham and others obeyed. When God explained how to build the ark, Noe obediently built the ark. When God told Abraham to offer his own son as a holocaust, he obeyed. When God said, “But if thou wilt not let them go, behold, I will strike all thy coasts with frogs” (Exodus 8:2), He was faithful to His word and frogs covered the land of Egypt. When God relayed details about making the tabernacle and the ark, His directions were followed. When God was not happy with a man collecting sticks on the sabbath day, the Lord told Moses to let the man die and hence, Moses complied. When Mother Mary gave birth to Jesus, she followed the law of purification of women after child birth. In all these cases, and many more, God’s words were not philosophically dissected as harbouring an unsaid subjective meaning. What would God think if Noe made the ark 600 cubits in length, as opposed to 300?! God, in the Old Testament, was very clear with His commands. Likewise, when God speaks to the faithful through the Chair of St. Peter, His words are to be taken as wholly true. ‘Baptism of desire’ etc. advocates attest the opposite, affirming dogmatic words are not absolute, but subject to unwritten exceptions. From this standpoint, it seems the Old Law was more exact than the New Testament! This is absurd, as the Holy Gospel is greater and full of Christ’s wisdom. To protest real and natural water is not necessary for baptism is a great revolution against the words of Jesus Christ. According to Sanborn, Cekada, Kramer etc., ‘anyone’ can be saved because God can extraordinarily debunk His own laws and open heaven for non-Catholics. This mindset is abominable and labels God a deceiver. Now, of course, God allows certain heresies to arise, but never have such heresies been taught by the magisterium in any document of faith or morals and applied to the Universal Church. To defend these heresies is to place a statue of a fallible man in front of almighty God.

This heretical teaching that non-Catholics can be united to the Church and be saved without the Catholic Faith was actually one of the greatest reasons for why the Great Apostasy even happened. Once this heresy was imbibed, Vatican II and the post-Vatican II Church could then justify almost anything because “we cannot say that all of them are lost.” All of Vatican II’s heresies on ecumenism, religious liberty, etc. are directly connected to what Sanborn and priests like him believe. In fact, if you were to ask a Novus Ordo priest about the dogma Outside the Church There is No Salvation and the necessity of the Catholic Faith, you would receive an answer very similar to Donald Sanborn’s answer above. The Novus Ordo priest would tell you about invincible ignorance, the soul of the Church, etc.

If a Jew or Buddhist or a Muslim can be saved without the Catholic Faith, then the Church’s dogma on salvation has no meaning. It is meaningless literally and in every sense of that word! And if that dogma doesn’t mean what it has declared, as they believe, then there is no reason to believe in any other dogma. They are all without meaning – truly meaningless. Hence, it was in the decades before Vatican II, when the majority of clerics started to believe that the Church’s teaching on salvation is meaningless, that they were ready for Vatican II.

More Blatant Heresy

In late July 2013, Bishop Donald Sanborn once again admitted that he believes non-Catholics and souls in false religions can be saved. The actual words (for which we have indisputable proof) are quoted below. He made the statement within the hearing of Anthony Cekada, who of course holds the same condemned heresy. As has been pointed out repeatedly, all BOD heretics essentially believe in or accept this heresy. The statement below proves the claim in that regard to be correct, once again. What’s particularly interesting about this quote is that Sanborn admits such people are saved ‘outside’ the Church – a word for word denial of Catholic dogma. Sanborn is a horrible heretic, but at least he openly expresses what all the BOD heretics believe/accept: salvation outside the Church. At least he doesn’t always lie about that aspect of it.

Bishop Donald Sanborn, July 2013: “… in principle someone who is outside the faith is considered to have lost his soul. And I say in principle because, yes it is possible that they be justified interiorly by various acts of justification which I won’t go into here, but in principle, to adhere to a false religion means that you are excluded from Heaven. It’s only if you fulfill certain – you know, a whole bunch of conditions, and whole various things take place – that a person outside the Catholic faith could achieve justification, and, with yet more conditions, could achieve salvation.”

Think about how satanically dishonest BOD heretics are, who hold the same heresy. They not only deny the dogma, but most of them will also deny that they or their priests believe anything like what is expressed above! The truth is that they all accept the heresy that souls can be saved in any religion, outside the Church, etc.

Moreover, while Sanborn does acknowledge what the heretics believe, he is dishonest (and of course heretical) in his explanation. For his claim that the people who are saved ‘outside’ the Church must fulfill numerous ‘conditions’ is of course nonsense. He says that in an attempt to make it appear as if salvation outside the Church isn’t for all members of false religions, just some. However, his position leaves him with no basis for such an assertion. He could not say (and he doesn’t truly believe) that salvation outside the Church is not widespread. If pressed he would be forced to admit that he doesn’t know who is saved, and that he cannot judge anyone to be certainly excluded. That necessarily follows from his heretical position.

For once you deny the dogma, as he does, you have removed the barrier. You therefore are left with no basis whatsoever upon which to say that conditions must be fulfilled for a non-Catholic to be saved, or that salvation for non-Catholics is rare; for the dogma doesn’t teach that there is salvation outside the Church, but only with ‘conditions’ or ‘rarely.’ No, it infallibly declares (repeatedly) that no one at all is saved outside the Church (or without the Catholic faith) under any circumstances; and if that’s not true, as the heretics believe, then anyone (and any number of people in any kind of condition) can be saved outside the Church. They are left with no basis whatsoever to say that salvation requires x, y, and z conditions; and their attempts to do so are only dishonest ways to make their heresy sound less shocking. In fact, Sanborn and Cekada have admitted that they believe Jews who reject Christ can be saved.

All the people who die in cultures which have never been penetrated by the Gospel go to Hell for sins against the natural law and the other grave sins which they commit – which bad will and failure to cooperate with God’s grace is the reason He does not reveal the Gospel to them. The First Vatican Council defined infallibly, based on Romans 1, that the one true God can be known with certitude by the things which have been made, and by the natural light of human reason.

St. Paul, Romans 1:18-20: “For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in injustice: Because that which is known of God is manifest in them. For God hath manifested it to them. For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity: so that they are inexcusable.”

Everyone can know with certainty that there is a supreme spiritual being, Who is the One True God and the Creator of the world and all that it contains. Everyone knows that God is not something that they have carved out of wood or jade or stone. They know that God is not the tree that they worship or the river they worship or the rock or the snake or the sacred tree frog. They know that these things aren’t the Creator of the universe. Every such person knows that he is worshipping a creature rather than the Creator. They are, as St. Paul says in verse 20, without excuse. St. Augustine explains this well in reference to persons who died ignorant of the Faith and without baptism.

St. Augustine (+428): “… God foreknew that if they had lived and the gospel had been preached to them, they would have heard it without belief.” (The Faith of the Early Fathers, Vol. 3: 1997)

Because God is all knowing, He knew all of the good and bad sheep, the elect and the damned, even before the earth was created: "For all things were known to the Lord God, before they were created." (Eccus. 23:29) And because God is all powerful, He creates the elect as well as the damned and gives them both ample opportunities and occasions in a time or times and place or places in which they can cooperate with His grace and get baptized by water and enter the Catholic Church sometime before they die, even if by a miracle, provided on their own part there is no hindrance: "The works of God are done in judgment from the beginning, and from the making of them he distinguished their parts, and their beginnings in their generations." (Eccus. 16:26) "[God] hath made of one, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, determining appointed times, and the limits of their habitation." (Acts 17:26) And because God is all powerful, He clears all obstacles that would prevent His elect of good-will from being baptized by water and entering the Catholic Church: "No word shall be impossible with God." (Lk. 1:37)

St. Thomas Aquinas, De Veritate, 14, A. 11, ad 1: “Objection: It is possible that someone may be brought up in the forest, or among wolves; such a man cannot explicitly know anything about the faith. St. Thomas replies: It is the characteristic of Divine Providence to provide every man with what is necessary for salvation… provided on his part there is no hindrance. In the case of a man who seeks good and shuns evil, by the leading of natural reason, God would either reveal to him through internal inspiration what had to be believed, or would send some preacher of the faith to him…”

St. Thomas Aquinas, Sent. II, 28, Q. 1, A. 4, ad 4: “If a man born among barbarian nations, does what he can, God Himself will show him what is necessary for salvation, either by inspiration or sending a teacher to him.”

St. Thomas Aquinas, Sent. III, 25, Q. 2, A. 2, solute. 2: “If a man should have no one to instruct him, God will show him, unless he culpably wishes to remain where he is.”

The Catholic Church, Pope Eugene IV, The Council of Florence, Jesus Christ, St. John and St. Peter

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Cantate Domino,” 1441, ex cathedra: “The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only for those who abide in it do the Church’s sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia produce eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.” (Denz. 714)

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, 1441, ex cathedra: “The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and teaches that the matter pertaining to the law of the Old Testament, the Mosaic law, which are divided into ceremonies, sacred rites, sacrifices, and sacraments, because they were established to signify something in the future, although they were suited to the divine worship at that time, after our Lord’s coming had been signified by them, ceased, and the sacraments of the New Testament began; and that whoever, even after the passion, placed hope in these matters of the law and submitted himself to them as necessary for salvation, as if faith in Christ could not save without them, sinned mortally. Yet it does not deny that after the passion of Christ up to the promulgation of the Gospel they could have been observed until they were believed to be in no way necessary for salvation; but after the promulgation of the Gospel it asserts that they cannot be observed without the loss of eternal salvation. All, therefore, who after that time [the promulgation of the Gospel] observe circumcision and the Sabbath and the other requirements of the law, the holy Roman Church declares alien to the Christian faith and not in the least fit to participate in eternal salvation.” (Denz. 712)

1 John 5:11-12: “And this is the testimony, that God hath given to us eternal life. And this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son, hath life. He that hath not the Son, hath not life.

“For God so loved the world, as to give His only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in Him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.” (John 3:16)

“He that believeth in the Son hath life everlasting: but he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)

To assert that one can attain salvation while rejecting Jesus Christ is to disbelieve in the Gospel and to fail to understand its core message.

“Now this is life everlasting, that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3)

“And he said to them [the Jews]: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore, I said to you, that you shall die in your sins: for if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.” (John 8:23-24)

“Amen, Amen, I say to you: he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber… I am the door.” (John 10:1, 9)

“Jesus saith to them: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

“… the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ… Nor is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name, under heaven, given to men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).

Fr. Fahey, Bishops Dolan, McKenna, Sanborn, Fr. Cekada, Tom Droleskey and countless others

Fr. Denis Fahey, The Kingship of Christ and the Conversion of the Jewish Nation (1953), p. 52: “The Jews, as a nation, are objectively aiming at giving society a direction which is in complete opposition to the order God wants. It is possible that a member of the Jewish Nation, who rejects Our Lord, may have the supernatural life which God wishes to see in every soul, and so be good with the goodness God wants, but objectively, the direction he is seeking to give to the world is opposed to God and to that life, and therefore is not good. If a Jew who rejects our Lord is good in the way God demands, it is in spite of the movement in which he and his nation are engaged.”

Tom Droleskey: “It is, therefore, a little presumptuous to conclude that men who were never once censured during their lives are in error while the man who was called to the Holy Office of the Inquistion (and refused to go after repeated requests) is considered to have had the sole and correct interpretation of the doctrine of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus [referring to Fr. Feeney]. Bishops Dolan, Sanborn, Pivarunas, Kelly, and McKenna, each of whom is teaching the Catholic doctrine that was taught by Fathers McNabb and Fahey without being censured, are great champions of the Faith in this era of conciliar apostasy and betrayal.”

Bishop Robert McKenna, to Bro. Peter Dimond, Nov. 25, 2004: “2. I answer your ‘one simple question’ regarding Fr. Denis Fahey’s saying, ‘The Jews, as a nation, are objectively aiming at giving society a direction which is in complete opposition to the order God wants. It is possible that a member of the Jewish Nation, who rejects Our Lord, may have the supernatural life which God wishes to see in every soul, and so be good with the goodness God wants, but objectively, the direction he is seeking to give to the world is opposed to God and to that life, and therefore is not good. If a Jew who rejects our Lord is good in the way God demands, it is in spite of the movement in which he and his nation are engaged.’ Fr. Fahey in these words is in fact recognizing Baptism of DesireI could not agree more with what Fr. Fahey says…”

Bishop Donald Sanborn, Sacerdotium V, p. 24: “Vatican II’s idea of the Church is heretical, since it identifies organized religions of pagans and idolaters with the Mystical Body of Christ.

CONCERNING THOSE BAPTIZED VALIDLY AS INFANTS BY MEMBERS OF NON-CATHOLIC SECTS

The Catholic Church has always taught that anyone (including a layman or a non-Catholic) can validly baptize if he adheres to proper matter and form and if he has the intention of doing what the Church does.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Exultate Deo,” 1439: “In case of necessity, however, not only a priest or a deacon, but even a layman or woman, yes even a pagan and a heretic can baptize, so long as he preserves the form of the Church and has the intention of doing what the Church does.” (Denzinger 696)

The Church has always taught that infants baptized in heretical and schismatic churches are made Catholics, members of the Church and subjects of the Roman Pontiff, even if the people who baptized them are heretics who are outside the Catholic Church. This is because the infant, being below the age of reason, cannot be a heretic or schismatic. He cannot have an impediment which would prevent Baptism from making him a member of the Church.

Pope Paul III, Council of Trent, Sess. 7, Can. 13 on the Sacrament of Baptism: “If anyone shall say that infants, because they have not actual faith, after having received baptism are not to be numbered among the faithful… let him be anathema.”

This means that all validly baptized infants wherever they are, even those baptized in heretical non-Catholic churches by heretical ministers, are made members of the Catholic Church. They are also made subject to the Roman Pontiff (if there is one). So, at what one point does this baptized Catholic infant become a non-Catholic – severing his membership in the Church and subjection to the Roman Pontiff? After the baptized infant reaches the age of reason, he or she becomes a heretic or a schismatic and severs his membership in the Church and severs subjection to the Roman Pontiff when he or she obstinately rejects any teaching of the Catholic Church or loses Faith in the essential mysteries of the Trinity and Incarnation.

Pope Clement VI, Super quibusdam, Sept. 20, 1351: “…We ask: In the first place whether you and the Church of the Armenians which is obedient to you, believe that all those who in baptism have received the same Catholic faith, and afterwards have withdrawn and will withdraw in the future from the communion of this same Roman Church, which one alone is Catholic, are schismatic and heretical, if they remain obstinately separated from the faith of this Roman Church. In the second place, we ask whether you and the Armenians obedient to you believe that no man of the wayfarers outside the faith of this Church, and outside the obedience of the Pope of Rome, can finally be saved.”

So, one must be clear on these points: 1) The unbaptized (Jews, Muslims, Mormons, pagans, etc.) must all join the Catholic Church by receiving valid Baptism and the Catholic Faith or they will all be lost. 2) Among those who are validly baptized as infants, they are made Catholics, members of the Church and subjects of the Roman Pontiff by Baptism. They only sever that membership (which they already possess) when they obstinately reject any Catholic dogma or believe something contrary to the essential mysteries of the Trinity and Incarnation. In the teaching of Pope Clement VI above, we see this second point clearly taught: all who receive the Catholic Faith in Baptism lose that Faith and become schismatic and heretical if they become “obstinately separated from the faith of this Roman Church.”

The fact is that all Protestants who reject the Catholic Church or its dogmas on the sacraments, the Papacy, etc. have obstinately separated from the Faith of the Roman Church and have therefore severed their membership in the Church of Christ. The same is true with the “Eastern Orthodox” who obstinately reject dogmas on the Papacy and Papal Infallibility. They need to be converted to the Catholic Faith for salvation.

The baptized children who reach the age of reason (and become adults) in Protestant, Eastern Schismatic, etc. church buildings and believe in the Trinity and the Incarnation (the essential components of the Catholic Faith) and who don’t reject any Catholic dogma because they don’t know of any other than the Trinity and Incarnation, and who don’t embrace any positions incompatible with the Catholic faith, Faith in God, Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the Natural Law (see: The Natural Law) or what they know to be clearly taught in Scripture, WOULD BE CATHOLICS IN A HERETICAL CHURCH BUILDING.

Council of Elvira, Canon 22, 300 A.D.: “If someone leaves the Catholic Church and goes over to a heresy, and then returns again, it is determined that penance is not to be denied to such a one, since he has acknowledged his sin. Let him do penance, then, for ten years, and after ten years he may come forward to communion. If, indeed, there were children who were led astray, since they have not sinned of their own fault, they may be received without delay.” (The Faith of the Early Fathers, Vol. 1: 611n)

This means that the children above reason who were attending the church of a heretical sect with their parents were not heretics because they were not obstinately against something they knew to be taught by the Church! This fact is also true of all people of all ages who go to a heretical church without being obstinately opposed to any Church teaching. This is exactly the Catholic position and what the Church has always taught (as we have seen) – which is that to be a heretic one must obstinately reject something they know to be taught by God or the Catholic Church.

Canon 1325, 1917 Code of Canon Law: “After the reception of baptism, if anyone, retaining the name Christian, pertinaciously [or obstinately] denies or doubts something to be believed from the truth of divine and Catholic faith, [such a one] is a heretic.”
