Hutton Gibson Exposed (huttongibson.com) Beliefs, Heresies and Practices Exposed

Hutton Gibson (born August 26, 1918) is an American writer on Sedevacantism, a World War II veteran and the father of 11 children, one of whom is the actor and director Mel Gibson. He was born in Peekskill, New York, the son of businessman John Hutton Gibson and Australian opera singer Eva Mylott.

Hutton Gibson served as a US Army Officer during World War II after graduation from an Officer Candidate School program.

Following a grand champion victory on the 1968 Jeopardy! game show, he moved his family to Australia in 1968 in protest against the Vietnam War and because he believed that changes in American society were immoral.

Gibson and his family, including his son Mel, have been alleged to be members of the Catholic Traditionalist Church of the Holy Family in Malibu, a private church belonging to an independent Catholic community; the church building has been funded by Mel Gibson.

Hutton Gibson, with many Traditionalists, believes that the Second Vatican Council was a secret anti-Christian plot by both Masons and Jews. Gibson also holds to other theories, such as his claim that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were carried out by "remote control" by Zionists as well as his denial of commonly "accepted" aspects of the Jewish Holocaust.

Hutton Gibson also publishes a quarterly newsletter propagating his views under the name The War is Now!

It has been repeatedly and incorrectly claimed that Hutton Gibson is a Sirianist.

Hutton Gibson's Heretical Beliefs and Practices Exposed

As we will see, Hutton Gibson believes in the heresy that men can be saved without explicit faith in the Incarnation and the Most Holy Trinity. He says they can be saved by an implicit faith if they are invincibly ignorant, meaning, apostate Jews, Moslems, pagans, and Protestants who live and die in their false religions can be saved and enter heaven. This is heresy:

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Athanasian Creed, Sess. 8, Nov. 22, 1439, ex cathedra: “Whoever wishes to be saved, needs above all to hold the Catholic faith; unless each one preserves this whole and inviolate, he will without a doubt perish in eternity.– But the Catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in the Trinity, and the Trinity in unity

“But it is necessary for eternal salvation that he faithfully believe also in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ… the Son of God is God and man… This is the Catholic faith; unless each one believes this faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.”

He also holds the schismatic position that it is heresy to say one must absolutely be baptized

by water to have a hope to be saved. He accuses those who believe that one must be baptized by

water in order to be saved of teaching heresy.

Pope Paul III, The Council of Trent, Sess. 7, Can. 5 on the Sacrament of Baptism, ex cathedra: “If anyone says that baptism [the Sacrament] is optional, that is, not necessary for salvation (cf. Jn. 3:5): let him be anathema.”

Hutton Gibson totally rejects the Catholic dogma on salvation

Hutton Gibson, October, 2004 Newsletter:

Objection from a reader: “…you quote Joseph Pohle, S.T.D.: ‘In like manner Mass may be celebrated privately for the souls of deceased Jews and heathens, who have led an upright life, since the sacrifice is intended to benefit all who are in purgatory.’ [the reader says:] This is pure modernism, and implies that a Jew or heathen who has led an upright life but died outside the Body of Christ on earth could be in Purgatory.’ Hutton Gibson’s response: … ‘I can appreciate that Leonard Feeney might have difficulty in reconciling Joseph Pohle’s implication with his own views. Naturally, if no Jew or heathen can be saved, then neither can be in Purgatory. But Pohle had never encountered Feeney’s subsequent innovation, and therefore took no cognizance of it.’”

Comment: A few years back Hutton Gibson, the “traditionalist” father of the famous Mel Gibson, wrote us and expressed his disappointment that we hadn’t quoted him in Issue #1 of our magazine. He also stated that entire writings of his had been dedicated to our “heresy.” Hutton has denounced us several times in his newsletters. As we inform the many people who ask us about Hutton Gibson, the unfortunate fact is that Hutton Gibson does not possess the Catholic Faith (even though he claims to be Catholic), because he obstinately rejects the dogma that all who die as non-Catholics are lost. It is a fact that Hutton Gibson believes that non-Catholics can be saved without the Catholic Faith. He has indicated this many times in his writings. He consistently attacks with a devilish tenacity the staunch priest Fr. Leonard Feeney, because Fr. Feeney believed and defended this dogma which Hutton hates so much.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Cantate Domino,” 1441, ex cathedra: “The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only those who abide in it do the Church’s sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia productive of eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.”

In his October newsletter, we see that Hutton Gibson again reveals his heretical depravity. He is asked about Jews and heathens getting into Purgatory, and therefore being saved. He says that Fr. Feeney might have a problem with this, but J. Pohle (a heretic who also rejected the dogma) did not encounter Feeney’s “innovation.” In other words, according to Hutton Gibson, it is an “innovation” of Fr. Feeney that all who die as Jews and heathens cannot be saved! This is clear-cut heresy from a wicked man who is subverted in his sins. Hey Hutton… you liar and corrupter of the Faith… tell Pope Eugene IV and Pope Gregory XVI that this was Fr. Feeney’s innovation… you heretic.

Pope Gregory XVI, Summo Iugiter Studio, May 27, 1832, on no salvation outside the Church: “Finally some of these misguided people attempt to persuade themselves and others that men are not saved only in the Catholic religion, but that even heretics may attain eternal life… You know how zealously Our predecessors taught that article of faith which these dare to deny, namely the necessity of the Catholic faith and of unity for salvation… Omitting other appropriate passages which are almost numberless in the writings of the Fathers, We shall praise St. Gregory the Great who expressly testifies that THIS IS INDEED THE TEACHING OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. He says: ‘The holy universal Church teaches that it is not possible to worship God truly except in her and asserts that all who are outside of her will not be saved.’ Official acts of the Church proclaim the same dogma. Thus, in the decree on faith which Innocent III published with the synod of Lateran IV, these things are written: ‘There is one universal Church of all the faithful outside of which no one is saved.’ Finally the same dogma is also expressly mentioned in the profession of faith proposed by the Apostolic See, not only that which all Latin churches use, but also that which… other Eastern Catholics use. We did not mention these selected testimonies because We thought you were ignorant of that article of faith and in need of Our instruction. Far be it from Us to have such an absurd and insulting suspicion about you. But We are so concerned about this serious and well known dogma, which has been attacked with such remarkable audacity, that We could not restrain Our pen from reinforcing this truth with many testimonies.”

The following could take place at Hutton Gibson’s Judgment: [Jesus Christ]: You know, Hutton, that I stated again and again in the Gospel that he who does not believe in Me is condemned, and that Jews that don’t believe in Me will be condemned. And you know that the Council of Florence defined without exception that all who die as Jews are not saved. And yet you not only rejected this dogma and contradicted it, but you attacked those who professed it as heretics, and you dishonestly called this truth, given by Me and defined by the Council of Florence, Fr. Feeney’s innovation. You know that this is a lie, Hutton, for which there is no excuse. [Hutton Gibson would say]: Yes, it is true, Lord… I cannot deny it because it is true. [Jesus Christ]: You are condemned by your own words… Begone to the outer darkness, your sentence is Hell for all eternity.

This is not what could happen, but Hutton Gibson’s damnation is what will happen if he continues on his path – and it is what will happen to all the other heretics who believe the same way. Hutton Gibson is no different from the Protestants who cannot accept the Catholic dogma on the Eucharist or the Priesthood. He cannot accept the Catholic dogma on salvation; it is too hard for him, just like those who left Our Lord in John Chapter 6.

The Denial of the dogma “No Salvation Outside the Catholic Church.”

The implicit faith/desire heresy teaches that certain men, under the New Covenant, can be saved without explicit faith in the Incarnation and Most Holy Trinity if they are invincibly ignorant. Any priest or laymen who teaches the implicit faith heresy or calls Catholics heretics for putting forth the dogma that one must absolutely be baptized by water in order to have a hope for salvation must be avoided and cannot be supported by Catholics in any way. They are committing the same crimes that led to the Great Apostasy. They must know by now that the implicit faith heresy and BOD/BOB is the lynch pin heresy that has led to the Great Apostasy and was the deathblow to evangelization. Evangelization first had to be eliminated before the heresies of religious liberty and false ecumenism could take root in the Conciliar Church. Hutton does not agree, he says:

Hutton Gibson, The War is Now!, No. 45, p. 2: “This entire matter should concern us not in the least. None of it applies to us, or even to the Church. It may safely be left to God. It never stopped the missionary effort. That was accomplished by Vatican II’s Ecumenism and Religious Freedom.”

No, the denial of the dogma “No salvation outside the Catholic Church” had stopped the missionary effort and only then were the heresies of religious liberty and false ecumenism implemented in the Conciliar Church after Vatican II. What does Pope Gregory XVI teach?

Pope Gregory XVI, Mirari Vos, 1832: “13. Now We consider another abundant source of the evils with which the Church is afflicted at present: indifferentism. This perverse opinion is spread on all sides by the fraud of the wicked who claim that it is possible to obtain the eternal salvation of the soul by the profession of any kind of religion, as long as morality is maintained. Surely, in so clear a matter, you will drive this deadly error far from the people committed to your care. With the admonition of the apostle that "there is one God, one faith, one baptism" may those fear who contrive the notion that the safe harbor of salvation is open to persons of any religion whatever. They should consider the testimony of Christ Himself that "those who are not with Christ are against Him," and that they disperse unhappily who do not gather with Him.2 Therefore "without a doubt, they will perish forever, unless they hold the Catholic faith whole and inviolate.... 14. This shameful font of indifferentism gives rise to that absurd and erroneous proposition which claims that liberty of conscience must be maintained for everyone.”

Clearly, Pope Gregory teaches that before the heresy of religious liberty (liberty of conscience), came the heresy of justification and salvation for men in false religions provided they live a moral life (follow the natural law upon their heart). He clearly teaches, that first the sin of indifferentism is committed by denying the dogma of “No salvation outside the Catholic Church” by saying, “it is possible to obtain the eternal salvation of the soul by the profession of any kind of religion, as long as morality is maintained.” It is the propagation of this heresy, “this shameful font of indifferentism,” that “gives rise to that absurd and erroneous proposition which claims that liberty of conscience must be maintained for everyone.” After the Religious Liberty heresy follows the justification of the False Ecumenical movement. So we see, Hutton Gibson is dead wrong. It is the crafty denial of the dogma “No salvation outside the Catholic Church,” that Hutton is guilty of, that leads to the heresies of religious liberty and false ecumenism. The denial of the dogma “No Salvation Outside the Church” is the key dogma that had to be denied first. If this dogma were not first denied then the heresies of religious liberty and false ecumenism would have no chance of implementation.

And by their fruits you shall know them. When Mel Gibson was interviewed on National Television by ABC’s Diane Sawyer, just before his film came out, he had a great opportunity to evangelize. When asked about whether Jews and Muslims can be saved, all he had to do was read from the Bible, or point to the words of Jesus Himself [in Mk. 16:16; Jn. 14:6, etc.]. And Mel should have anticipated that ABC would ask him if he believes Jews go to heaven, so he should have been prepared simply to quote Our Lord Jesus Christ. Instead of simply quoting Jesus or Catholic dogma, Mel vacuumed the power and the truth out of the Gospel, and told the world a new gospel, that you don’t even have to be Christian to be saved.

From Mel Gibson’s interview with Diane Sawyer on PrimeTime:

DIANE SAWYER: (Voice Over) So when we talked with Gibson and his actors, we wondered, does his traditionalist view bar the door to Heaven for Jews, Protestants, Muslims?

MEL GIBSON: That’s not the case at all. Absolutely not. It is possible for people who are not even Christian to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s just easier for –and I have to say that because that’s what I believe.

DIANE SAWYER: (Off Camera) You have the nonstop ticket?

MEL GIBSON: Well, yeah, I’m saying it’s an easier ride where I am because it’s like –I have to believe that.

I remember when this occurred feeling extremely sad and disappointed, because I knew what a blow it was for the salvation of so many countless souls who were watching; souls who might have been impelled to seek further, to move closer, to investigate more deeply the traditional Catholic Faith, if Mel had simply professed its necessity and that it is the only way for them to be saved. Perhaps millions of souls could have heard the truth for the first time in their lives – the only truth that ultimately mattered for them in their lives filled with countless hours of worthlessness and diversion from the point of life and eternity. Mel could have told them that truth for once in their lives – a truth that may have shaken them out of their darkness – but no, he told them a lie instead. When Mel told the world on National Television, a world that was anticipating his new film day after day all over the news, that it’s not even necessary to be Christian to be saved, it was like the story of his film went from truth to fable, from history to theatre, from power to emptiness, from fact to fiction.

Mel Gibson uttered his heresy when he was sitting next to a Jew, Mia Morgenstern. Thus, Mel holds that Jews, Buddhists, Protestants, etc. can be saved, and even Jews who reject Christ. Mel’s interview was so bad that the next day on Good Morning America a Christ-denying Jew of the American Jewish Committee called Mel’s words “fabulous.” The Christ-denying Jew specifically made note of the fact Mel mentioned the possibility of non-Christians being saved. (The devil and those who are his take in all of this.)

And this brings me to two other points: 1) We often hear from those who believe in the heresy of salvation for the “invincibly ignorant”/non-Catholics without the Faith, that their belief is no hindrance to their effort to evangelize or profess the dogma Outside the Church There is No Salvation without compromise. This is nonsense! If this were true, then Mel Gibson should have been able simply to say what the Church says: Outside the Church There is No Salvation; but he couldn’t. Mel had to indicate that you don’t have to be Catholic to be saved because this is what he believes.

Pope St. Pius X condemned the following Modernist proposition on July 3, 1907 in “Lamentabili Sane”:

“The dogmas of faith are to be held only according to a practical sense, that is, as preceptive norms for action, but not as norms for believing.”- Condemned statement

The idea that we can preach that there is no salvation outside the Church, while we believe in our hearts that there is salvation outside the Church, is false and heretical. Those who believe in salvation for the “invincibly ignorant”/non-Catholics without the Faith will fail to call the non-Catholics to conversion without qualification when it matters, if they even try to convert them at all. They will fail to profess the necessity of the Catholic Faith precisely because they don’t believe in the necessity of the Catholic Faith. A true Catholic, on the other hand, can call non-Catholics to conversion without compromise precisely because he believes what he professes. And the Catholic Church believes what She professes.

2) A “traditionalist” who also denies this dogma recently complained that those of us who adhere strictly to this truth are making such a “big deal” about this, and causing division among traditionalists. The hypocrisy of this statement is astounding. Think about this: if you don’t want division, then why can’t you people just be quiet – nay, shut the heck up – and repeat with the Catholic Church that all who do not die as Catholics will not be saved? Why must you and your heretical friends insist on the contrary and all kinds of “exceptions”? Does this benefit anyone, even if they were true? Even if you believed that some men who are not Catholic can be saved without the Faith (which is clearly false), you know that it does no one any good to insist on this idea, so why do you go out of your way to do so? Is this not totally evil? Can you not see that this is evil, that it benefits only the devil, that it serves only to discourage conversions and evangelism?

Why can’t you just shut your mouths, drop your pens and repeat without exception: Outside the Catholic Church There is No Salvation? Are you trying to keep non-Catholics from the Catholic Faith? You blind fools, you are enemies of God and the non-Catholics whom you falsely try to justify! For even if you believed that some men don’t need the Catholic Faith for salvation, you can see that it does not benefit anyone to insist on this. But you insist on this falsehood simply because those who don’t believe this truth cannot profess it when it matters, and the devil causes you to attack the truth which you have despised in your hearts.

Only those who believe in their hearts that there is utterly no salvation outside the Church (Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council) will be able to profess it and truly call non-Catholics to conversion, which is true charity.

Hutton Gibson believe the invincibly ignorant non-Catholics can be saved

Those who do not know of Hutton Gibson may be thinking, does Hutton believe invincibly ignorant non-Catholics can be saved by an implicit faith/desire? The answer is yes. He teaches this heresy that has been condemned by Pope Gregory and many other popes.

Hutton Gibson, The War is Now!, No. 49, p. 3: “If the invincibly ignorant are saved it is not through ignorance but from co-operation with grace and conformity to God’s will. It is far harder for them so to conform in ignorance than for Catholics who know their obligations. We don’t know who or how many these people are.”

You have just read Hutton say that an invincibly ignorant non-Catholic can conform to God’s

will, meaning he can live a moral life, according to the law that is written upon his heart. Pope

Gregory, condemning Hutton, says, “This perverse opinion is spread on all sides by the fraud of the wicked who claim that it is possible to obtain the eternal salvation of the soul by the profession of any kind of religion, as long as morality is maintained. Surely, in so clear a matter, you will drive this deadly error far from the people committed to your care. With the admonition of the apostle that "there is one God, one faith, one baptism" may those fear who contrive the notion that the safe harbor of salvation is open to persons of any religion whatever.” (Pope Gregory XVI, Mirari Vos, # 13, August 15, 1832)

The natural law is written on the heart of all men, so that all men know that certain things are against God’s law and that certain things are in accordance with the natural law of charity, etc.

The natural law is the law that every person knows by instinct from birth. It is planted by the Creator in our heart, and everyone – even pagans who have never heard about God or the true Catholic religion – receive this gift from God. Examples of sins that break the natural law and that are easy to recognize are abortion, murder, rape, theft, pedophilia, homosexuality, slander, and lying. The conscience always convicts a person who does these things and thus there can never be an excuse for people who commit such sins.

Romans 2:14-16: “For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature those things that are of the law; these having not the law are a law to themselves: Who shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness to them, and their thoughts between themselves accusing, or also defending one another, In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”

As the Haydock Bible and Commentary correctly explains about Romans 2:14-16:

these men are a law to themselves, and have it written in their hearts, as to the existence of a God, and their reason tells them, that many sins are unlawful...”

It is infallibly taught in Sacred Scripture that everyone above the age of reason can know with certainty that there is a God. They know this by the things that are made: the trees, the grass, the sun, the moon, the stars, etc. Anyone who is an atheist or agnostic (who believes that God does not exist or is unknowable) is without excuse. The natural law convicts him. This is a revealed truth of Sacred Scripture.

Creation itself bears witness that there is a God, that is, a living, omnipotent and intelligent Being who created it. The apostle Paul wrote to the saints in Rome that since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and Godhead – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made (Romans 1:20); and David said that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19:1). Therefore, since the existence of God is so clearly witnessed by His works, those who deny His existence are without excuse. “The fool has said in his heart, ‘there is no God” (Psalm 53:1).

God defined infallibly, based on Romans 1, that the one true God can be known with certitude by the things which have been made, and by the natural light of human reason.

Romans 1:19-21: “Because that which is known of God is manifest in them. For God hath manifested it unto them. For the invisible things of Him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; His eternal power also, and divinity: SO THAT THEY ARE INEXCUSABLE.”

All men have the natural law (moral laws), and laws against idolatry (Wisdom chaps. 14,15,16) and false religions upon their hearts. A non-Catholic can keep these laws that are in his heart even though he may commit other sins and break other laws. As St. John teaches, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." (1 John 1:8,10) The laws that a non-Catholic keeps defend him and grant him the reward of actual grace toward his conversion. However, the laws upon his heart that he breaks accuse him before God and render him fully guilty. "For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature those things that are of the law; these having not the law are a law to themselves: Who shew the word of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness to them, and their thoughts between themselves accusing, or defending one another." (Romans 2:14-15) Even if a non-Catholic could keep all of the laws that are upon his heart, this will still not save him because he does not have supernatural faith, the root of which is explicit faith in the Incarnation and the Most Holy Trinity. His ignorance does not give him what he needs to be saved. So how can they be saved in that case? The answer is that if there are truly any people of sincere and of good will who have not yet attained the faith, provided they cooperate with the natural law, then God would send a preacher (even miraculously, if necessary) to bring the Catholic Faith and baptism to him.

God is all knowing and all powerful and keeps His promises

Because God is all knowing, all powerful, and keeps all His promises, He will never let any ultimately good-willed person die without getting baptized by water and entering the Catholic Church. If you believe this is impossible for God, then you are a heretic for believing that God is not all powerful and all knowing: "With God all things are possible." (Mt. 19:26)

Jesus said that all men must be baptized by water to be saved; and He meant it literally. Jesus also promised that other good sheep (that is, good-willed unbelievers) would hear His voice and enter the Catholic Church before they die: "And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd." (Jn. 10:16) Because God keeps His promises, He sees to it that all these other good sheep will hear His voice, believe in Him, and receive the sacrament of baptism and enter the Catholic Church sometime before they die.

St. Thomas Aquinas, De Veritate, 14, A. 11, ad 1: Objection: "It is possible that someone may be brought up in the forest, or among wolves; such a man cannot explicitly know anything about the faith." St. Thomas replies: "It is the characteristic of Divine Providence to provide every man with what is necessary for salvation… provided on his part there is no hindrance. In the case of a man who seeks good and shuns evil, by the leading of natural reason, God would either reveal to him through internal inspiration what had to be believed, or would send some preacher of the faith to him"

St. Thomas Aquinas, Sent. II, 28, Q. 1, A. 4, ad 4: "If a man born among barbarian nations, does what he can, God Himself will show him what is necessary for salvation, either by inspiration or sending a teacher to him."

St. Thomas Aquinas, Sent. III, 25, Q. 2, A. 2, solute. 2: "If a man should have no one to instruct him, God will show him, unless he culpably wishes to remain where he is."

All the people who die in cultures which have never been penetrated by the Gospel go to Hell for sins against the natural law and the other grave sins which they commit – which bad will and failure to cooperate with God’s grace is the reason He does not reveal the Gospel to them. St. Augustine explains this well in reference to persons who died ignorant of the Faith and without baptism.

St. Augustine (+428): "… God foreknew that if they had lived and the gospel had been preached to them, they would have heard it without belief." (The Faith of the Early Fathers, Vol. 3: 1997)

Because God is all knowing, He knew all of the good and bad sheep, the elect and the damned, even before the earth was created: "For all things were known to the Lord God, before they were created." (Eccus. 23:29) And because God is all powerful, He creates the elect as well as the damned and gives them both ample opportunities and occasions in a time or times and place or places in which they can cooperate with His grace and get baptized by water and enter the Catholic Church sometime before they die, even if by a miracle, provided on their own part there is no hindrance: "The works of God are done in judgment from the beginning, and from the making of them he distinguished their parts, and their beginnings in their generations." (Eccus. 16:26) "[God] hath made of one, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, determining appointed times, and the limits of their habitation." (Acts 17:26) And because God is all powerful, He clears all obstacles that would prevent His elect of good-will from being baptized by water and entering the Catholic Church: "No word shall be impossible with God." (Lk. 1:37)

Hutton Gibson says that Protestants, Jews, and Moslems can be saved

Hutton also said that those who never heard of the gospel, such as practicing Protestants, Jews, and Moslems, can be in a state of grace and be saved if they die as such.

Hutton Gibson, Letter to..., 6/26/01: “According to you, if anyone has never heard of Christ and His Gospel he will not be condemned for that but he will be condemned anyway, whether or not he is in a state of grace. You insist that all Protestants, Jews, Moslems, etc, are corrupt, steeped in mortal sin, predestined for hell. This is utterly absurd.”

This is pure heresy, apostasy and blasphemy! Our Lord and His Church at all times condemns all those who commit acts of idolatry by worshipping false gods and practicing false religions, as being corrupted and steeped in sin, and calls them to conversion as their only hope for salvation. Whereas, Hutton has placed them in a state of grace and ready for Heaven, without hearing the Word of God, without faith in Jesus Christ, without the cleaning waters of baptism, and without entering the Catholic Church, and he has the nerve to say that people are absurd for saying they need these things to be saved. The world is upside down when men like Hutton are looked upon as Catholics. In the days of the Inquisition Hutton would be burnt at the stake as the vilest of all heretics, as an apostate, for teaching such abominable things that are odious to pious ears. Hutton has blasphemed the Holy Ghost. Hutton wrongly says that these souls are predestined to hell if one “insist that all Protestants, Jews, Moslems, etc,” are damned for dying as non-Catholics! God predestines no one to hell. However, God does know the eternal destiny of all men before they are created. Hutton proves that he does not understand the Catholic doctrine of predestination.

As Catholics, of course, we don’t believe as the heretic John Calvin, who held a predestination according to which no matter what one does he is either predestined for Heaven or Hell and that God wills it that way. That is a wicked heresy. Rather, as Catholics we believe in the true understanding of predestination, which is expressed by Romans 8, Acts 13.

Romans 8:29-30: "For whom He foreknew, he also predestinated to be made conformable to the image of his Son: that he might be the first-born amongst many brethren. And whom he predestinated, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."

Acts 13:48: "And the Gentiles hearing it, were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were preordained to life everlasting, believed."

This true understanding of predestination simply means that God’s foreknowledge from all eternity makes sure that those who are of good will and are sincere will be brought to the Faith and come to know what they must – and that all those who are not brought to the Faith and don’t know what they must simply were not among the elect. It is a point of faith, that this foreknowledge of the Almighty no ways interferes with man’s liberty, but leaves him still a perfectly free agent, and therefore responsible for his actions.

St. Augustine, Tractate 89, on John 15:22-23: "What, then, does He [Jesus] mean by the words, If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin? [John 15:22] Was it that the Jews were without sin before Christ came to them in the flesh? Who, though he were the greatest fool, would say so?... But when He went on to say, But now they have no excuse for their sin, some may be moved to inquire whether those to whom Christ neither came nor spoke, have an excuse for their sin. For if they have not, why is it said here that these had none, on the very ground that He did come and speak to them? And if they have, have they it to the extent of thereby being barred from punishment, or of receiving it in a milder degree? To these inquiries, with the Lord's help and to the best of my capacity, I reply, that such have an excuse, not for every one of their sins, but for this sin of not believing on Christ, inasmuch as He came not and spoke not to them."

Hutton implies God is Stupid and Powerless!

Hutton Gibson, The War is Now!, No. 45, p. 1: “Those who insist on literal Catholic Baptism with water lack understanding of God’s revealed plan. God wishes all men saved. So He makes it impossible for most [to be saved by requiring baptism]?

Just because God wants all men to be saved does not mean all men will be saved. As a matter of fact only few will be saved, very few. Does this mean God is unjust or “makes it impossible for most” to be saved? It is of the faith that un-baptized infants who die go to hell but without suffering the punishment of fire:

Pope Pius VI, Auctorem fidei, Aug. 28, 1794: “26. The doctrine which rejects as a Pelagian fable, that place of the lower regions (which the faithful generally designate by the name of the limbo of the children) in which the souls of those departing with the sole guilt of original sin are punished with the punishment of the condemned, exclusive of the punishment of fire, just as if, by this very fact, that these who remove the punishment of fire introduced that middle place and state free of guilt and of punishment between the kingdom of God and eternal damnation, such as that about which the Pelagians idly talk” – Condemned as false, rash, injurious to Catholic schools. (Denz. 1526)

Here Pope Pius VI condemns the idea of some theologians that infants who die in original sin suffer the fires of Hell. At the same time, he confirms that these infants do go to a part of the lower regions (i.e., Hell) called the limbo of the children. They do not go to Heaven, but to a place in Hell where there is no fire. This is perfectly in accord with all of the other solemn definitions of the Church, which teach that infants who die without water baptism descend into Hell, but suffer a punishment different from those who die in mortal sin. Their punishment is eternal separation from God.

Pope Pius XI, Mit brennender Sorge (# 25), March 14, 1937: “‘Original sin’ is the hereditary but impersonal fault of Adam’s descendants, who have sinned in him (Rom. v. 12). It is the loss of grace, and therefore eternal life, together with a propensity to evil, which everybody must, with the assistance of grace, penance, resistance and moral effort, repress and conquer.”

As will be proven, there is no possible way for children to be freed from original sin other than through the Sacrament of Baptism. This, of course, proves that there is no way for infants to be saved other than through the Sacrament of Baptism. So the following definitions merely affirm what has already been established: no child can possibly enter the kingdom of Heaven without receiving water baptism, but will rather descend into Hell.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Letentur coeli,” Sess. 6, July 6, 1439, ex cathedra: “We define also that… the souls of those who depart this life in actual mortal sin, or in original sin alone, go straightaway to hell, but to undergo punishments of different kinds.”

The Catholic Church teaches that aborted children and infants who die without baptism descend immediately into Hell, but that they do not suffer the fires of Hell. They go to a place in Hell called the limbo of the children. The most specific definition of the Church proving that there is no possible way for an infant to be saved without the Sacrament of Baptism is the following one from Pope Eugene IV.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Session 11, Feb. 4, 1442, ex cathedra: “Regarding children, indeed, because of danger of death, which can often take place, when no help can be brought to them by another remedy than through the sacrament of baptism, through which they are snatched from the domination of the Devil [original sin] and adopted among the sons of God, it advises that holy baptism ought not be deferred for forty or eighty days, or any time according to the observance of certain people…” (Denz. 712)

Pope Eugene IV here defined from the Chair of Peter that there is no other remedy for infants to be snatched away from the dominion of the devil (i.e., original sin) other than the Sacrament of Baptism. This means that anyone who obstinately teaches that infants can be saved without receiving the Sacrament of Baptism is a heretic, for he is teaching that there is another remedy for original sin in children other than the Sacrament of Baptism.

Pope Martin V, Council of Constance, Session 15, July 6, 1415 - Condemning the articles of John Wyclif - Proposition 6: “Those who claim that the children of the faithful dying without sacramental baptism will not be saved, are stupid and presumptuous in saying this.” - Condemned

The arch-heretic John Wyclif was proposing that those (such as ourselves) are stupid for teaching that infants who die without water (i.e., sacramental) baptism cannot possibly be saved. He was anathematized for this assertion, among many others. And here is what the Council of Constance had to say about John Wyclif’s anathematized propositions, such as #6 above.

Pope Martin V, Council of Constance, Session 15, July 6, 1415: “The books and pamphlets of John Wyclif, of cursed memory, were carefully examined by the doctors and masters of Oxford University… This holy synod, therefore, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, repudiates and condemns, by this perpetual decree, the aforesaid articles and each of them in particular; and it forbids each and every Catholic henceforth, under pain of anathema, to preach, teach, or hold the said articles or any one of them.”

So those who criticize Catholics for affirming the dogma that no infant can be saved without the Sacrament of Baptism are actually proposing the anathematized heresy of John Wyclif. Here are some other dogmatic definitions on the topic:

Pope St. Zosimus, The Council of Carthage, Canon on Sin and Grace, 417 A.D.- “It has been decided likewise that if anyone says that for this reason the Lord said: ‘In my Father’s house there are many mansions’ [John 14:2]: that it might be understood that in the kingdom of heaven there will be some middle place or some place anywhere where the blessed infants live who departed from this life without baptism, without which they cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven, which is life eternal, let him be anathema.” (Denz. 102, authentic addition to canon 2.)

Pope Paul III, The Council of Trent, On Original Sin, Session V, ex cathedra: “If anyone says that recently born babies should not be baptized even if they have been born to baptized parents; or says that they are indeed baptized for the remission of sins, but incur no trace of the original sin of Adam needing to be cleansed by the laver of rebirth for them to obtain eternal life, with the necessary consequence that in their case there is being understood a form of baptism for the remission of sins which is not true, but false: let him be anathema.” (Denz. 791)

This means that anyone who asserts that infants don’t need the “laver of rebirth” (water baptism) to attain eternal life is teaching heresy. St. Augustine was perhaps the most outspoken proponent of the apostolic truth that infants who die without Baptism are excluded from the Kingdom of Heaven (since they have original sin).

St. Augustine, A.D. 415: “Anyone who would say that infants who pass from this life without participation in the Sacrament [of Baptism] shall be made alive in Christ truly goes counter to the preaching of the Apostle and condemns the whole Church, where there is great haste in baptizing infants because it is believed without doubt that there is no other way at all in which they can be made alive in Christ.” (Jurgens, The Faith of the Early Fathers, Vol. 3: 2016.)

The Revelations of St. Bridget also corroborates this infallible dogmatic truth revealed by God in Book 5, Interrogation 6:

First question. Again he appeared on his ladder as before, saying: "O Judge, I ask you: Why does one infant emerge alive from the mother's womb and obtain baptism, while another, having received a soul, dies in the mother's belly?"

Answer to the first question. The Judge answered: "You ask why one infant dies in the mother's belly while another emerges alive. There is a reason. All the strength of the child's body comes, of course, from the seed of its father and mother; however, if it is conceived without due strength, because of some weakness of its father or mother, it dies quickly. As a result of the negligence or carelessness of the parents as well as of my divine justice, many times it happens that what was joined together comes apart quickly.

Yet a soul is not brought to the harshest punishment for this reason, however little time it had for giving life to the body, but, rather, it comes to the mercy that is known to me. Just as the sun shining into a house is not seen as it is in its beauty - only those who look into the sky see its rays - so too the souls of such children, though they do not see my face for lack of baptism, are nevertheless closer to my mercy than to punishment, but not in the same way as my elect." - The Revelations of St. Bridget, Book 5, Interrogation 6, Question 1

More proof:

“But consider my goodness and mercy! For, as the teacher says, I give virtue to those who do not have any virtue. By reason of my great love I give the kingdom of heaven to all of the baptized who die before reaching the age of discretion. As it is written: It has pleased my Father to give the kingdom of heaven to such as these. By reason of my tender love, I even show mercy to the infants of pagans. If any of them die before reaching the age of discretion, given that they cannot come to know me face to face, they go instead to a place that it is not permitted for you to know but where they will live without suffering.” - The Revelations of St. Bridget, Book 2, Chapter 1

These fascinating sentences clearly affirm infallible Catholic dogma by teaching that no one can see God’s face without water baptism. Yet, they also give us explicit confirmation that these children are in a state of light and mercy, though not in the same way as those in Heaven.

Yet according to Hutton, if an un-baptized infant who died is in hell then God is unjust. “So He makes it impossible for most [to be saved by requiring baptism]?”

Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, Constitution 1, 1215, ex cathedra: “But the sacrament of baptism is consecrated in water at the invocation of the undivided Trinity – namely, Father, Son and Holy Ghost – and brings salvation to both children and adults when it is correctly carried out by anyone in the form laid down by the Church.”

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Letentur coeli,” Sess. 6, July 6, 1439, ex cathedra: “We define also that… the souls of those who depart this life in actual mortal sin, or in original sin alone, go straightaway to hell, but to undergo punishments of different kinds.” (Denz. 693)

Those who refuse to believe in the dogma Outside the Church There is No Salvation until they understand how there is justice in it are simply withholding their Faith in Christ’s revelation. Those with the true Faith in Christ (and His Church) accept His teaching first and understand the truth in it (i.e., why it is true) second. A Catholic does not withhold his belief in Christ’s revelation until he can understand it. That is the mentality of a faithless heretic who possesses insufferable pride. St. Anselm sums up the true Catholic outlook on this point.

St. Anselm, Doctor of the Church, Prosologion, Chap. 1: “For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, that unless I believed, I should not understand.”

It is impossible for an un-baptized infant to be preached to, they do not even have a chance to hear the word. So how is it that God sends these souls to hell when they did not even have a chance to hear the word and make a choice? Why has God damned these souls when it was impossible for them to hear the word? The answer lies in the proper understanding of predestination, of God’s all-knowing attribute of omniscience and His all-powerful attribute of omnipotence.

Hutton cannot properly answer this because he does not have supernatural faith and with his limited intelligence, which is what all humans have, he brings God down to his level because he does not accept by faith these attributes of God and His just judgments when he damns an un-baptized infant, or ignorant pagan to hell. Hutton and his like infer that God is unjust or stupid and powerless to save those of good will.

First: They infer that God is unjust or stupid. They presume that God infused a good-willed soul into the womb of a woman on a pagan island without the possibility of being baptized by a missionary before his death. God seeing this would then have to say: how thoughtless could I have been to abandon this poor good-willed soul on this island in which no missionary will reach him in its lifetime. So, we see, God is portrayed as stupid, denying His foreknowledge. God did not know that this soul was good-willed before his conception, and allowed him to be born on this remote island, with no hope of him being preached to nor baptized in his lifetime.

Second: They infer that God is powerless, denying His Omnipotence; He could not physically get a missionary to this soul to baptize him within his one lifetime if it turned out that he really was of good will. If faith can move mountains, God can see to it that water Baptism reaches every good-willed man. God knows ahead of time the disposition of souls; He places them where he pleases, and has the power to see to it that they get baptized if they are of good will. It is those who deny the necessity of the Sacrament of Baptism who are limiting God’s knowledge and power, and question His justice and abuse His mercy. The potter has power over the vessel to do as He pleases, both were created to glory, but since one of the vessels is rejecting His grace, it is in the end headed to destruction; the vessels of glory due to their good will and the vessels of destruction due to their bad will (Rom. 9). What is man but dust and dirt, that he judges a man worthy of heaven who lived and died explicitly in unbelief. If God allowed a man to die in manifest unbelief, who is man to judge him worthy of heaven?

Testimony: I would like to respond to Jose regarding babies who die without baptism, my wife and I also lost a baby due to miscarriage but yes that is the teaching of the church because all things are always before God, past, present and future God knows you before you are born, he knows how you will turn out before you are born. Obviously God saw that this baby would not be saved anyway if He allowed the baby to be born, he or she would have suffered hell with fire but instead the soul of the baby suffers hell without fire, one can see God’s mercy in that!!! I understand how you feel Jose but you are looking at it from an emotional level and not the reality of Jesus' teaching on baptism. If you also look at what Jesus says about how many are saved {few} then you can have a better understanding about how things really are, especially in these endtimes.

Therefore Hutton and his like accuse almighty God of being stupid, unjust and powerless. This is precisely the sin Hutton commits in the eyes of God when he dare questions God’s judgments by saying un-baptized men who do not explicitly believe in the Incarnation and the Most Holy Trinity can be worthy of heaven.
